Nancy Drew

On this page, I will be writing a little bit of ND history.

Nancy Drew is the sassy, kind, smart and funny girl detective who has been inspiring girls and women since 1930!
Nancy is an only child. She has a father named Carson Drew who is a well known lawyer. Mr. Drew often worries about his daughter when she is out sleuthing but, in the end, usually consents and allows her to continue her detective work.

Nancy’s mother, Kate Drew, died when Nancy was 3. The story of just how Nancy’s mother died, has changed over the years. Some books say she died of an illness, others, a car crash.

Helen Corning was Nancy’s first sleuthing companion. It’s hard to describe her personality because it has changed a lot over the years. Helen was later replaced by the characters who, now, we all think of as Nancy’s best friends – Bess Marvin
(girly and sometimes boy crazy)
and George Fayne
(the opposite of Bess and very sporty)
. Helen is still present in a few of the books after the revisions but, sadly, she eventually faids away into ND history.

Ever since book 7, The Clue In The Diary, Ned Nickerson has been Nancy’s special friend/boyfriend (with the exception of their short break-up in a later book). Those of us who have read book 7, know that Nancy and Ned met during a fire and yet, some later books (such as the graphic novels) claim they met in high school! In the Clue Crew mystery books, when Nancy is 8,she meets a younger Ned in school.
So, as you can see, certain parts in the books can be a bit…wishy-washy.(;

I realize that there should be more info but, don’t worry, I plan on adding more very soon.

  1. Hey, Sassy Sleuth! πŸ™‚ Cool page about Nancy! πŸ™‚ I have a question – or maybe a couple actually. πŸ˜› Could you tell me which books mention about what Nancy’s mother’s name is and when they said ? I’ve been very curious about those things especially with the new game coming later. Thanks! πŸ™‚

Talking about the various series about when Ned and Nancy meet – in the Clue Crew books, they go to school together!

    • Hi!
I’m glad you like my page(I still need to add more information to it).(:
Very good question…I just don’t think I can answer it.I’m pretty sure her name was first mentioned in the later books(because I don’t recall her name ever being mentioned in the first 56).I usually only read the originals.
Thanks for reminding me!I’ll be sure to add that to my page.

      • Hi! πŸ™‚ Really curious about this! Her name’s not been in any of the newer Mystery Stories or Girl Detective books that I’ve read nor in the Nancy Drew Diaries. I did a search and couldn’t find “Kate Drew”. Such a mystery! So do the originals say “accident” or “illness”?
        No problem. πŸ™‚

      • Hi,again!(:
I searched “Kate Drew” after reading your first comment and didn’t find anything either!
This is definitely a question that should be answered before the next game.I’ll tell you if I find anything.
Another good question!I looked through my books this morning and all they said was that she died.BUT,I recall reading somewhere that,in the originals, she died of a short illness and in the newer books (after the first 56) she died in a car crash.
Since a car crash was the most recent explanation, that’s probably why HeR used it in the teaser.

  2. Hi Sassy! πŸ™‚
    Yep, very mysterious!
I totally agree. Thank you so much! πŸ™‚
Really appreciate you looking and trying to find out. We have two mysteries to solve, Sassy! πŸ˜€
That sounds likely of why HeR chose that. Most of the ones I’ve read just say that it happened when Nancy was three.
And if I find out anything more, I’ll be sure to let you know, also! πŸ™‚

    • Hey,again!
I think I have an answer to your first question!
I asked another blogger(who knows a lot about ND)when Kate Drew’s name was first mentioned and it turns out her name never was mentioned in the books!HeR made it up.
The books DO tell us what her maiden name was.It was Austin.(:

      • Nice work, Sleuth! πŸ˜€ Thanks so much for checking into that and finding out – I appreciate it very much! πŸ™‚ I had asked over at the Amateur Sleuth blog right before the weekend, thinking that someone there might know since we hadn’t personally come across that info in books we’ve read so far and another fan did! 😎 So we’ve both found out conclusive proof of what we were suspecting – not in the books! Oh, and also learned what book mentions Nancy’s mom’s maiden name, she said original text The Hidden Window Mystery. πŸ™‚ And that in the French editions her mom’s name is Elise Beauchamp. πŸ™‚ Plus that there’s a lot of info in The Clue in the Whistling Bagpipes about her mom’s family. Have you read that one yet? πŸ™‚

      • Hi!
        Thanks!You’re welcome.(:
WOW!You found out a lot!You did an awesome job too,Ann!I never knew any of that.(:
Yes,I have read that book-a great story.
        That’s one mystery solved.(:

  3. Hi! πŸ™‚
    Thanks, Sassy! πŸ™‚
The cover to the Whistling Bagpipes looks really cool. πŸ™‚
All right – a mystery solved! πŸ˜€ *virtual high five!* πŸ˜€
